The performing arts centre is a complex of buildings from various time periods. The project is a combination of 2 build wings and the renovation of 4 other ones. The peculiar sculptural shape of the extension amplifies the contrast between old and new. The spatial scheme of the complex is organized around a central courtyard – the focal point where all different spaces and studios meet. The constellation of bay windows, watch towers, balconies, stairs, tunnels and see-throughs, small squares, alleys and terraces makes it a small city with many ‘houses’ – and ‘houses’ being the different spaces for theatre, dance, film, concert and visual arts. A public route cuts through the building, connecting the spatial network for artists, public, students and staff to the city. It is a city in a city, a house with many rooms, each with their own atmosphere and own interior finishing. The red brick that is used for the external façade blends in perfectly with the urban fabric of Leuven.
