Genzyme is a pioneer in medical biotechnology. It has set up its main premises in Lyon, in the Gerland district. A production unit, laboratories and offices are brought together behind a double skin that affirms the urban aspect of this project. Throughout the project design stage great attention was paid to research and studies into the environmental and health impacts of construction materials. Using lifecycle analyses and safety data sheets, we were able to choose healthy materials for people and the environment. The carpets, paints and timber used have “label” certification. In the same way, deconstruction and recyclability, cleaning and maintenance were all key criteria in the choices made. The thermal strategy is organised around a very efficient casing, consisting of a double glass skin, actively regulating the hygrothermal atmosphere inside the building summer and winter alike. An atrium distributes natural light inside the offices.
