The historic Alster Arcades in the centre of Hamburg characterises the city between the Binnenalster and the Rathausmarkt. However, while the old arcade dating from the 19th Century, has lost none of it's attraction, the newer part, with it's flat-roof construction and dating from the 1960's, has neither it's loftiness or it's generosity. BRT's design, dating from 1998, has adopted the grace and form of the historical buildings, without merely copying them. The theme of the old arcade is reinterpreted in a modern manner. Over a length of approximately 80 metres, the partially transparent roof of the New Alster Arcades drapes like a long piece of material falling towards the Alsterfleet. The regular rhythm of the parabolic arches serves to connect with the massive arches of their historic counterparts (text from architect's website).
