More than 20 years after it first opened, the Franz Marc Museum in the Bavarian town of Kochel has been extended. The three-story new building houses works by Marc as well as exhibits from the Stangl collection. The older building accommodates the restaurant, offices and the museum's educational rooms. Located in a forest clearing, the two buildings enclose a forecourt forming a compact ensemble that presents a different aspect depending on the angle of approach. When approached from the lake the new structure peeps out modestly from behind the older building, whereas the new building dominates the view when approached from the upper parking lot, gradually retreating into a more equal dialogue at close quarters. The protuberance on the upper floor, which appears to look away towards the lake, refers to the eaves and roof ridge of the older building.
