The harbour area fronting the picturesque Hanseatic town of Stralsund lay unused for a long time. The gaps between the old 19th-century storehouses got bigger and bigger. The Ozeaneum, an extension of the German Maritime Museum and designed by Stuttgart-based Behnisch Architekten, is intended to breathe life back into the area and create a waterfront experience. In the Ozeaneum, one can find 8700 m² of exhibition surface and 39 aquariums, holding about six million litres of water and around 7000 living animals (text from website Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs).
