The clients for this project have lived in the house for many years and intend to do so into the future. The house had a poor relationship to the rear garden. It did not make the most of the sunshine and light available at the rear of the house and the internal organisation of the rooms did not support the day-to-day living and working life of the family. The brief also called for a home office and a ground floor sleeping room with its own fully accessible shower room. The strategy was to take down the rear wall of the house, to add a new large, open plan family living, dining and cooking space to the side and rear and to make a new sunny terrace at first floor level. The terrace is designed to connect the first floor sleeping and working rooms more directly to the garden via an external staircase, and also compensates for any garden area lost as a result of making the new addition to the rear.
