S House

Located in southwest Pistoia in a residential area with several old mechanical workshops (overlooking the area) awaiting restoration. The east west orientated plot (16x38.5m) includes 2 factory blocks once used for industrial purposes. These are transformed into a studio-home for an artist. A new brick front is overlooking the street. The simple, basic spaces with walls of light and quiet areas are immobile and seem to have been here forever, entrusted to the poetry of the materials, the purity of the angles, colours and surfaces. The east-facing street entrance opens up to a large pine patio with white walls framing the sky. It crosses ample open areas to the 2 main spaces: the workshop and the large studio room, linked to the south by a new passageway running along the whole plot. The new span-roof of the main space ends with 3 large parallelepiped wells of light placed along a central suspended ceiling which conceals artificial lighting and air conditioning.
