Hotel Arena Tostay
Hotel Arena 'tostay' is situated in a building that is a city monument with a rich history. The whole complex houses not just the hotel, but also a restaurant, bar and nightclub. Built in 1890 as a Roman-Catholic orphanage with its own chapel. It was used as an orphanage until 1950, then it was converted into a home for elderly. In 1982 the Amsterdam Municipality bought the building and decided to change it into a youth hostel. The hostel had 600 beds and became a known centre for the performing arts. Theatre companies rehearsed on the premises and the former chapel became a famous pop music stage. In 1990 the youth hostel was privatized and a process of rebuilding and upgrading begun. The three star hotel ‘tostay’, the café ‘todrink’ and restaurant ‘todine’ were designed in a modern style, and ‘tonight’, situated in the former chapel, has become one of Amsterdam’s most popular clubs.
