Theatre Houses Chassé Area
The theatre houses are one of the planning units in the urban plan (by OMA) for the Chassé area. The central idea for this plan is a campus, a number of unusual structures set within a green urban context. The design was inspired by the environment. OMA called the theatre "the Siedlung"; a group of family houses with a distinct cohesion.
The challenge for DAT was blending structures of different scales, from large scale buildings to their environment (theatre, municipal office building, apartment buildings) to individual houses. This has influenced the concept of the design. The muschelkalk limestone frames give measure and scale to the whole building block. The wooden cladding divides the whole block into units. The entrances and stairs with house numbers show the individual houses.
The houses are designed "back-to-back" with an east-west orientation. By connecting the houses crosswise, all houses have a sun orientation and view on both sides of the building block.
