Boijmans van Beuningen
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has world-class collections of old masters, modern and contemporary art, applied arts and design. The museum also has a library which is over a 100 years old and is now situated in the splendid new building designed by Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem. The library is visible from the street, on the corner of the Westersingel. The extension and renovation by the Belgium architects added several galleries and offices to the east side. It also comprises a new entrance, moved to a courtyard. Over the years of its existence the Boijmans has undergone several additions, alterations, extensions and renovations. This latest project is therefore aimed at ‘making the building smaller’, which meant the architects had to carefully reorder the internal infrastructure and relations between spaces – to eventually, make it easier for the visitor to find his way. The result is a deceptively simple, integer and subtle architecture to make space for the art to present itself.
