A listed building located on the Pieter de Hoochweg, the former Nautical College now houses the Communication & Multimedia Design academy. The design concept fits in with the type of instruction – class study versus individual study. The classrooms are in the Nautical College. Individual study and research take place in a study landscape contained in the Sterrenwacht, the former gym in the inner premises. The two free-standing buildings are connected by a glass roof, creating an atrium which forms the heart of the school. This heart accommodates the catering facilities and connects the monument to the stacked study landscapes in an organic way. The existing opening in the street wall is kept, so that the transformed Sterrenwacht remains partially visible from the second building line.
