The neighbourhood Waterwijk (waterquarter) is situated in the new urban suburb Nesselande, an expansion area of Rotterdam. In this quarter the 12 dwellings are the main eye-catchers at the edge of the neighbourhood, with a row of periscope-houses next to the water. Nesselande lies somewhere between Nieuwerkerk and Zevenhuizen. In the 'exclusive and idyllic archipelago' the prosperous (mostly inhabitants of Rotterdam, fleeing the city) can built their dreamhouse without interference of municipal committees. Despite a specially organized design competition (as an inspiration-tool for fresh, new ideas), the area offers the same familiar image many of these neighbourhoods have: a lot of catalogus-houses and here-and-there an architectural stunt. In the masterplan some parts have been allocated for medium scale project developments, and this project is one of them. The 12 dwellings are built upon the so-called drive-in principle: you park your car in the house, and live on the first floor.
