Five-star Hotel Puerta America, has opened its doors to the public. A celebration of avant-garde interior design and architecture, Puerta America brings together 19 of the world's finest architects and designers—including Zaha Hadid, John Pawson, and Norman Foster. Each of the hotel's 12 floors bears the imprint of a different design talent and measures 1300 m2. The only constraint was that each had to contain 28 rooms and 2 junior suites. The external structure was developed by SGA Studio and is a fairly standard rectangular tower block. John Pawson did the common areas, while Jean Nouvel designed the cladding on the facade and the 12th floor. Ron Arad (Ron Arad Associates) says he sees the Puerta America project as a clear evolution towards a new interpretation of what a hotel is. In his view, the participants have been given a license to experiment, which dovetails perfectly with his design ethos: the idea is not just to design a room but to find a different way of organizing space.
