Lyde End is a group of six houses commissioned by Lord Carrington (who later became Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher) for a plot of land opposite his home. They were intended to provide low rent accommodation to locals, who were unable to afford to buy houses in the area. AC&C were allowed to determine the number and size of dwellings with the proviso that the scheme should suit the location and must not be neo-georgian in style. All the houses are variations on a theme of a spine wall with spaces either side covered by mono-pitch roofs. Most units are around 60m square in area. Only one is two storey. All are organised around a central courtyard which serves as a communal car storage area. The scheme is reknown for its use of a combination of modern and traditional materials executed in a contemporary manner that acknowledges the vernacular but refuses to bow to pastiche, yet still sits comfortably in its context. It has won numerous awards and was listed Grade II in 2009
