With the change of use of the power station, a formerly inaccessible terrain was turned into a place that is now used by the public. Zurich based Vogt Landschaftsarchitekten designed the outside space next to the Tate Modern (redesigned for reuse by Herzog and De Meuron). They created a series of gardens with birch trees and a square: “The birch trees create a spatial complexity of confinement and expansiveness and create the familiar picture of an alluvial forest. At the same time, the birches are pioneer trees on urban and industrial vacant lots. The groups of foreign trees, with their different coloured barks and irregular placement, contradict the usual connotation of this tree. The design of the various types of gardens is part of a typical London tradition of urban gardens. It is neither a public square nor a private garden but a hybrid: an English square.”
