This project was the winner of a low-cost housing project competition organised by Peabody Trust, the well-known social housing developers. Nonetheless, its author's wish resulted in a final cost which is not low. The author's desire was to give the project an identity, which would link it to the history of this area of warehouses and factories along the Thames and propose new building materials for the façades. At any rate, the virtue of the project is in condensing a dozen good-sized homes into a reduced plot of land. To do that, it remakes the typical urban townhouse on the outskirts of town. It divides the townhouses into independent flats and introduces a new element, an outdoor staircase. This outdoor staircase allows for better lighting and more space on the inside of the built volumes and increases the permeability of the lot.
