Unison HQ
Unison is the UK's largest public sector workers union, representing 1.3m members. This new HQ replaces a very depressing and dilapidated building across the Euston Road. The new site incorporates the Grade II listed former Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. Garrett Anderson was the first woman to qualify as a physician in the UK in 1865 and in1890 opened the hospital solely for the treatment of women by women doctors. The new development wraps around the hospital in an "L" shape, creating a court between the old and new which is glazed over and used as a covered amenity space. A tower on the Euston Road marks the organisation's presence and is topped with a double height council chamber. The former hospital accommodation is used as meeting rooms, whilst one room on the ground floor serves as a small museum dedicated to Garrett Anderson. The scheme also includes 17 social housing apartments, located at the rear of the site, and 30 flats for sale in Grafton Place.
