Wansey Street Housing
Wansey Street Housing is the pilot project for Elephant and Castle regeneration masterplan. A gap site between different typologies, the scheme reinterprets the terrace with 21st century requirements for density, flexibility, sustainability, ownership and security. The graduated, striped composition of the façade - a progression from canary yellow to vermilion - links buff-coloured, London stock Victorian terrace and red brick former town hall. The scheme also connects with its neighbours in terms of scale and proportion. The split level arrangement of the adjacent terraces is continued with steps and ramps to a garden level one metre below the street, and the living rooms open out to the communal south-facing garden at the rear. A genuinely pepper-potted mix of accommodation, the integration of social housing and private sale is helped by shared stairwells and interlinking units. This is the (invisible) social achievement of the design.
